Movies bring us together; they are a staple of our culture and the impacts of them are seen all around us. Whether it’s a goofy comedy or hard-hitting documentary movies make us think and question ourselves and our situations. Here are five movies in various categories that will make you think twice.

I Am Not Your Negro

(PG-13)

This is a powerful film directed by Raoul Peck and based off of James Baldwin's unfinished script. This film is a strong reminder that there is still so much to be done and a up close look at America's failure to do better. This film and its message should not be forgotten and should be taken seriously by everyone. This is a must watch going into 2021. This film is rated PG-13 and has a run time of 1h 35m.

Ponyo (G)

From the legendary director Hayao Miyazaki, Ponyo is a magical adventure filled with color and life. This film follows a goldfish princess named Ponyo and her human friend Sosuke in a lighthearted journey in which Ponyo increasingly becomes more humanlike. This film is a great flick perfect for the family and people of all ages. This film is a great entryway into the wonderful world of Hayao Miyazaki and Japanese anime movies in general. We know this will be a hit in 2021 just as it has been since its release in 2008.

Chef (R)

Directed by and starring Jon Favreau, Chef is a 2014 movie following the life of Carl Casper a Los Angeles chef who after a well-respected food critic leaves a less than favorable review rethinks his career and along the way falls back in love with cooking and family. Chef is an easy to watch movie great for date night or even a casual movie night with the family, with a total runtime of 1h 55m Chef is a must watch this year.

Beasts Of No Nation (NR but R)

Beasts of No Nation is a hard hitting and at times difficult to watch reminder of the horror and pain a child solider goes through adapted from a book by the same name. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and starring Idris Elba this film follows a recently orphaned boy in a civil war-ravaged country as he is taken and trained by a brutal warlord (Idris Elba) and joins a band of guerrilla soldiers.

Blade Runner 2049 (R)

The long-awaited sequel to 1982’s Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049 is a visually and audibly stimulating trip through a futuristic Los Angeles. Blade Runner 2049 follows LAPD officer, Officer K (Ryan Gosling) as he navigates mystery and searches for Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) in an attempt to keep a crumbling world out of Chaos. For the best viewing experience we highly recommend viewing this film in a place with surround sound capabilities. This is a must see!
